At its county convention last weekend, the Durham County GOP endorsed a resolution supporting statehood for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, should a majority of the Puerto Ricans of voting age so choose.
The Durham County GOP also urged the National Republican Party to increase its effort to show Puerto Ricans that Republican principles are a good fit for their aspirations for a strong Puerto Rico with a limited government, strong economy and personal liberties.
As the Resolution stated, Puerto Ricans have been serving in our armed forces for over 100 years and add greatly to our diverse nation. Puerto Ricans have been American citizens since 1917.
As Theodore Hicks, reelected as Chair at the convention, stated: "The National Republican Party supported Puerto Rican statehood in its 2012 National Platform. We stand together with the National Hispanic Republican Association to provide the option of statehood to our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico."
Hicks continued: "It is only just that Puerto Ricans have available to them all the rights of American citizenship."
